Novelty singer Yoyoy Villame passes away

By Julie      M. Aurelio
Inquirer

Posted date: May 18, 2007

MANILA,
Philippines — Novelty singer and comedian Roman “Yoyoy” Villame died
Friday afternoon of an apparent heart attack, some five hours after
being rushed to the Las Piñas Medical Center complaining of chest
pains, hospital staff and family members said.

Dr Joel Santos, who
worked the morning shift, administered cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
on Villame shortly after he was helped into the hospital’s emergency
room around 9 a.m. He was pronounced dead due to cardio-pulmonary
arrest.

Born in 1938, Villame was a former jeepney (minibus) and
bus driver from the island province of Bohol and is best known for his
comedic antics, as well as his Tagalog and Visayan novelty songs.

One of his songs, the popular “Mag-exercise Tayo,” hit the charts in 1977. He also composed the cutesy tongue twister "Butse Kik."

His first recording entitled Magellan (1972),
“was the beginning of a long span of albums and recordings of Yoyoy’s
humorous yet politically relevant songs in Visayan, Tagalog and English
that was uniquely his own style,” said the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong
Mang-aawit in its Online Registry of Filipino Musical Artists.

Dubbed "The Novelty King," Villame recorded more than 40 albums in his career as a singer.

He
also starred in several movies during the 1970s, including "Biktima"
and "Limasawa". Villame last starred in the critically-acclaimed movie
"Ang Babae sa Breakwater."

His nephew, Bernard Villame, recalled his uncle as a very generous fellow who helped him and his children in dire times.

"He gave Jeffrey, one of my sons, a tricycle because my son worked for him as a driver," Bernard said.

His
nephew also used to work on Villame’s staff when he was still a city
councilor. "Every time I needed assistance, he gave it," Bernard said
in Filipino.

Villame was a former councilor of Las Piñas City,
having been elected in 1988. His nephew, Bernard Villame, said his
uncle served for 10 years as councilor. He ran in 1995 as vice mayor
but lost.

"He planned to ran again as councilor this year, but he
backed out," Bernard told the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company
of INQUIRER.net.

Bernard said his uncle was a funny man even
off-stage. During parties, he would sing and poke fun at himself — "up
to the point of making visitors pee in their pants from laughter."

At the time of his death, Villame lived at the Doña Josefa Subdivision in Pilar Village, Las Piñas City.

He is survived by his children Hannah, who is also a singer; Apple, Olivia, Roman Jr., Lillian and John.

Poetry is just not enough

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

May 13, 2007

Well, what do you know…

Yesterday, when I actually managed to force myself out of my
couch potato state (I had been in it since February) and clean up pieces of my
shitty life (starting with my bedroom), guess what came out underneath the heap
of junk I have squirreled away for years? A printout of an excerpt from the
book “He’s Just Not Into you” by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo. I remember a
dear friend of my mine forwarding this to me way back (if you’re reading this,
you know who you are bitch :P ) but I never really got the chance to read it. The
title was enough to put me off. At that time, I had better things to do and was
too busy finding my feet in the road I’ve chosen for myself.

Unearthing it is surely a strange twist of fate. It is
exactly the thing I need at this point when I have pretty much wasted months of
my precious short life waiting for… a false hope.

I fooled myself
thinking that there was something out of the stares you throw me while I pretend
not to see them. That there was something special out of those brief exchanges
of poetic rumblings we’ve had. That there was something behind that smile, that
tender tap on my shoulder, your gentleman posture. That there was something out
of, unmistakably, nothing. Well, the wait is over pal and I’m ready to move on.

I’m afraid poetry is just not enough.

Love is the only law to obey
Don’t business what they say
Love is the only law to obey
Don’t business what they say

We only live to learn to love
And no lesson is greater
Make it your gain, suffer no shame

*****

So you won’t even know me
‘Cause you can’t look me in the eye
Well onlyl then my friend you would see
That I am a rebel in disguise
Said I am a rebel in disguise
And I am a rebel in disguise
We are rebels in disguise
We are rebels in disguise

*****

Don’t lose your way find it today
And don’t drop the speed, people in need
Don’t lose your way, find it today
I don’t drop my speed, the people in need

We are living in a world, living in a world, living in a world
Mama, I have got to change it
We are living in a world, living in a world, living in a world
On daddy, Oh daddy, I remember you told me
Living in a world, living in a world, living in a world
That’s so corrupt now, that’s so corrupt now
Living in a world so corrupt, got to be tough
Got to be rough, got to be tough, got to be rough now

*****

Tomorrow people, where is your past?
Tomorrow people, how long will you last?
Tomorrow people, where is your past?
Tomorrow people, how long will you last?

*****

In case YOU still dont know…

Ziggy Marley concert at the Hotel Sofitel. 4pm. Tickets at 600 / 1200 / 1400 pesos.

*****

Could you be so kind
Then show me a sign
I’ve been searching and it’s so hard to find
Decent values with a decent wine
Decent jubee running it down the line
Maybe it’s my mind
Maybe I’m blind
Maybe it’s the way that I’ve been spending my time
I’m still searching for a fine peace of mind
Decent jubee running it down the line

Techno blues

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

I know, I know, I haven’t been writing of late. Not my fault
really. It’s this stupid laptop going haywire almost all the time. I have gone
back and forth to the repair shop and Ive spent not a few thousands already to
get whatever’s troubling it fixed but all to no avail. Those damn people in the
shop are probably just milking money out of me since I have no know-how on
troubleshooting hardware problems. Now I’m forced to allocate money to buy
myself a new laptop. Shit. And I was planning on purchasing a high-end digital
SLR as a gift for myself this December pa naman… haaay buhay.

Technology can suck big time. Yes it does make your life comfortable
and easy but when it breaks down, you are rendered completely disabled.

I hate technology.

So… anybody generous enough to give me a digital SLR as a
Christmas present? I’ll take it. :)

Blogging blues

Anybody who can explain to me how I can make all my posts
accessible here in my blog? Sheesh, blogging in Friendster sucks. I want good
archiving!!!

(Psst! Pao! When will ya fix my livejournal ba? Psst!)

A brief sojourn into one of my newest favorite hangouts…

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

Mike, Pao and me were supposed to catch the Eiga Sai at CCP
last Saturday but since it got canceled (no thanks to Milenyo), we decided to
go to SM Mall of Asia and burn away time. As some of you already know, I’m not particularly fond
of going to malls, especially huge malls (because I hate crowds and I hate
crowded places – except those at rakenroll gigs or in MOBs), and especially SM
malls (for the same reason why I’m boycotting Mcdonalds), but I’ll make this
one an exception. Actually it’s not really the mall but the location that holds
my interest. I got to enjoy the scenic beauty of and feel the cool breeze from
Manila Bay. Sights of kids flying kites were enlivening and there were several
Isaw vendors about – and y’know I love Isaw! Anyway, overall we had a great time
(kahit nasira flip-flops ko and I had to walk inside the mall with plastic wrapped
around my left foot). Some nice shots below.

Gear up for Oktoberfest!!!

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

So much has happened in the past few days. So
many deadlines met and missed. Many friends made and lost. Some music relived
and forgotten. Some events graced and missed. And a few nice purchases and
discoveries and some junk…

But before anything else…
